Securing the North Sea: Strengthening Energy Security Through Cooperation
At OEEC, we heard a powerful message: energy security and offshore wind resilience must go hand in hand.
Aukje de Vries, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Aid, opened the session by reaffirming that wind power is essential to the Dutch energy system, and that government, industry, and international partners must work closely together to safeguard it.
From there, the panel delivered clear insights:
๐น Paul Flos (Ministerie van Defensie) emphasized the seriousness of todayโs security landscape and the need for shared responsibility and robust supply chains. โWe are in this together.โ
๐น Jurjan Blokland (Van Oord) highlighted the operational reality: we canโt protect everything, so rapid response and spare capacity are crucial.
๐น Paul Doherty, PhD. (Venterra Group) stressed that resilience must be built in from the start, even if it comes with additional cost.
The message across the board was unmistakable:
๐ A resilient, secure North Sea requires cooperation, preparedness, and investment from all sides.

What an incredible start to Offshore Energy Amsterdam!
Today has been really productive day of OEEC. Lots of networking, inspiring sessions, energized conversations.
The Official Energy Party kicks off in just a few minutes, though some exhibitors clearly couldnโt wait and have already started serving drinks and sparking new connections in the main hall.
A big thank you to everyone for making today such a success.
Enjoy the party, and see you all again tomorrow for Day 2!

Offshore wind remains one of the Netherlandsโ greatest energy opportunities, but the road ahead demands realism, collaboration, and sharper conditions for growth. The panel welcomed speakers from different sides to give a nuanced perpective of the topics: the industry, government, developers and research.
Karen Vennik (Van Oord), Michiel van Rij (RWE), Marielle Hetem, (Ministry of Climate and Green Growth) and Thomas Young Hwan Westring Jensen, (Aegir Insights).
Michiel van Rij (RWE) highlighted what developers need most: income certainty and stable conditions. Cross-border offshoreโonshore grid connections will be key to reducing costs. His message: the Netherlands already has the technology, the talent, and the processes โ letโs use what we have to grow, while continuing to innovate.
From the policy side, Mariรซlle Hetem (Ministry of Climate & Green Growth) addressed the recalibration of national ambitions. The shift from 50 GW to a more realistic 30โ40 GW by 2050 reflects current market and supply chain realities. Clarity is coming โ both in long-term targets and price frameworks.
But she emphasized shared responsibility:
Moderator Paul de Leeuw guided a conversation that underscored a common theme: Offshore wind in the Netherlands can thrive, but it requires predictability, partnership, and a more mature market foundation.
๐ The momentum is there. Now itโs about aligning ambition with reality to unlock the next chapter of growth.
